SUMITON — Sumiton Christian quarterback John Moon finished off a 72-yard drive with a game-winning touchdown pass to Garrett Potts, lifting the Eagles to a 20-16 victory over Southeastern on Friday.
Sumiton Christian Eagles came into the game winless against the Mustangs, but pulled off a victory thanks to a bit of homecoming magic and lot of perseverance.
The Eagles offense was faced with a fourth down and needed four yards to continue their final drive of the game.
Sumiton Christian coach Bart Black recalled his thoughts before the play, “I told the team were going to get them on this pass. We knew one of the receivers was going to be open and either of them could make the play. Jeremy Brown was the first read, and he made a great catch.”
Brown took the ball for 41 yards down to the 9-yard line and allowed the Eagles to keep the drive alive. Moon connected with Potts soon after for a 4-yard touchdown with only 48 seconds remaining in the final quarter. Corbin Hicks ran in the two-point conversion to extend the lead.
The Eagles defense then smothered the Mustangs hopes of a last-minute comeback behind Garrett Gable and Elijah Moon, who both collected four tackles.
Moon completed 19 of 27 pass attempts for 260 yards and 3 touchdowns. Potts caught 5 passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns.
The Eagles will travel to Meek next Friday night.
Coach Black commented on the teams upcoming challenge, “We have been focusing on Southeastern all week, but now we can really dig into planning for Meek. Im going to start watching film shortly and see how we need to prepare.”
