TARRANT — Quarterback John Moon continued to shine as Sumiton Christian’s playmaker, but was unable to hang with Tarrant in a 46-8 region loss.
Tarrant (2-3, 2-1) came out of the gates on fire with an 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Tarrant scored on another kickoff return for 72 yards in the second quarter, as well as a 22 yard rushing touchdown in the fourth.
Sumiton Christian (1-6, 1-3) still managed to show glimpses of hope throughout the game despite the score. Corbin Hicks brought the defense to life early in the second half with an interception to give his team a fighting chance when down only 20-6, but the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the following drives. The Sumiton Christian defense also managed to swarm Leeth in the end zone for a safety later in the third. Though the Eagles were able to halt the Wildcats on multiple drives, including a goal line stand in the first half, the Tarrant offense continued to persist until eventually taking off with the lead in the second half.
Moon had yet another strong performance as well, completing 13 of 22 passes for 169 yards and one interception, and rushing for 77 yards on 16 attempts. Moon completed a 27 yard pass to Garrett Potts for the team’s only touchdown. Potts has been one of Sumiton Christian’s top receivers throughout the season, gathering 125 yards on seven receptions during Friday’s game.
The Eagles will take some time to recover with a bye week before traveling to Aliceville.
